Beyond Post-Traumatic Stress – Living and Practicing in Contexts of Continuous Trauma

Date: May 29
Time: 8:00 - 10:00pm Beirut Time
Format: Live Online via Onlinevents
Facilitator: Myra Saad

About the Workshop

Most global mental health discourse centers on PTSD and C-PTSD—concepts developed primarily in the Global North. Yet, in many parts of the world, trauma is continuous, collective, and systemic, making these frameworks insufficient for understanding or intervention.

In this live online session, trauma specialist Myra Saad introduces the concept of Continuous Traumatic Stress (CTS) and offers a critical, culturally-grounded exploration of trauma in the Global South. Participants will gain theoretical and practical tools to rethink intervention strategies, reflect on their own professional experiences, and craft effective, locally relevant psychosocial support frameworks.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Critically revisit the history and limitations of PTSD in relation to sociopolitical contexts.

  • Understand the differences between PTSD, C-PTSD, and CTS, and how each model applies to ongoing trauma.

  • Learn the importance of recognizing trauma impacts that are often overlooked in Western frameworks.

  • Explore the distinction between resilience and steadfastness and how it influences culturally sensitive intervention planning.

  • Set meaningful and appropriate objectives for psychosocial support in prolonged trauma environments.

  • Apply creative and expressive methods to enhance trauma care delivery.

  • Explore self-care and therapeutic techniques for professionals exposed to continuous trauma.

  • Engage in open dialogue and collaboration to challenge trauma theory norms and co-develop new models of care.

Why This Workshop is Crucial

  • Trauma in the Global South often exists without resolution—current models don’t always serve these realities.

  • Mental health professionals must reflect on how they practice within the very environments that affect their clients.

  • This workshop offers a rare opportunity to align theory, practice, and context through a culturally sensitive lens.

Who Should Attend?

Ideal for professionals who:

  • Work in trauma-informed clinical or community roles

  • Have direct or indirect exposure to environments of ongoing violence or instability

  • Seek to move beyond standard PTSD models and apply more nuanced, effective strategies

If you live and work in contexts where trauma never “ends,” this workshop is designed for you.
